How to overcome the ONE thing that is stopping you from achieving your goals

I guarantee you, if you have EVER set about to improve yourself, to create change in your life, to start a business, a new education program, or even a simple shift of habit - then you WILL have faced the force of resistance.


Stephen Pressfield, author of the War of Art, coined the term 'resistance' refering to a natural force - as natural as gravity or decay - a force that WILL come against you as you strive to reach your goals.


Today on the podcast we're talking about how we can 1) RECOGNISE resistance when it comes in all its many forms - and 2) how we can BEAT IT, so that we can move forward and achieve our goals and change our lives.


On the podcast, we've talked many times before about the 'Hero's Journey' - well 'resistance' is the force that we encounter in the 'messy middle'. The dark days when the odds feel insurmountable. Have you been there? I know I have.


Resistance is responsible for derailing thousands of men and woman from achieving their goals - and yet, when it comes down to it, the force of resistance is surprisingly simple to outwit AND easy to beat IF you know the strategies - and that's what I want to share with you today.

  • [03:48] Two Common Mistakes in the 'messy middle': (1) We stop believing. (2) We stop focusing. Trust the process. It's not smart to go back and continually look at options.


  • [05:25] The human brain wants to function in one of two different perspectives: (1) Hot air balloon perspective. (2) Down in the forest.


  • [07:30] #1 Form of Resistance - False Humility: 'Who do you think you are?'


  • [08:16] #2 Form of Resistance - Comparison: 'What makes you think you're so special?' People have a fundamental need to belong to a group. Connection is what brings meaning and purpose to our lives.


  • [09:39] #3 Form of Resistance - Self-doubt: 'Are you sure this is what you're supposed to do?'


  • [10:51] #4 Form of Resistance - Perfectionism: 'Not good enough.' Creative and entrepreneurial people are susceptible to this resistance. There's no such thing as perfection on your first try.


  • [13:20] #5 Form of Resistance - Shame and Failure: 'Do you remember the last time you tried this?'


  • [14:40] #6 Form of Resistance - 'No one wants what you've got' or 'Everybody has done that'


  • [16:27] Beating resistance is not as complicated as you would think. Recognize what resistance is trying to do - it's like inertia, trying to maintain the status quo. We have to have courage; we have to be bold and be willing and wanting to grow to beat resistance.


  • [17:48] Recognize that these voices come out in the uncertainty of the forest. They thrive in the darkness. Beat resistance by talking about them with someone you trust or have experienced helping overcome resistance.


  • [18:38] Beat resistance by: #1 revisiting identity - reconnect with your mission. #2 maintaining strong mental habits. #3 sharing the journey - be honest with your struggles. #4 making ourselves accountable - set yourself small, achievable targets. #5 small, consistent steps. #6 doing the work - stop thinking about it and just start doing it!
